How do you draw thick lines and dotted lines in AutoCAD 2011?

I went to layer properties and picked line weight to increment the thickness of the line I was trying to draw but it didn't anything. Then I went to Line type and it worked but manage getting the dashes to be smaller. I need a dash line with really small dashes, smaller than an inch and I need a thick line. Thank you.
